Jim and Jeff have been working on repowering this 47 foot, 1971 Rhodes Motorsailer. Preliminary work started Winter 2017 and she motored off the dock in early July 2018. The new Yanmar Twin 4LV 150HP 168 cu in., 4 cyl common rail engines and ZF 63A transmissions replaced two Perkins 354 130HP diesels and the velvet drive transmissions. A new Northern Lights 6KW generator was installed. The complete repower consisted of all new shafts, hoses and thru-hull fittings.The 4LV engine is fully electronic and the manual controls were replaced with a Yanmar VCS (Vessel Control System). Additionally, the potable water system, air conditioning system and head facilities were upgraded and are fully functional.

The Yanmar 4LV engine is the newest electronic engine offered by Yanmar. Great Lakes Diesel's installation of these engines was the first anywhere in the United States!

We are currently installing a Northern Lights 6kW diesel generator with sound enclosure in a sailboat that originally did not have a generator. This installation required a custom built, stainless steel mounting frame with lock-out sliders for easy access for maintenance. Service included replacing a corroded flax packing gland with a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 PSS dripless packing.  

Having this generator provides the ability to run all 120 volt appliances: battery charger, microwave oven, refrigerator and AIR CONDITIONING when away from the dock. 

Currently we are working on replacing a Yanmar SD 25 saildrive. During a maintenance call, the saildrive oil was found to be milky, indicating water in the oil. Extensive damage to the saildrive warranted replacement of the entire lower unit.

In this case, water in the oil was caused by a loose prop hub. Left undetected, this created a vibration damaging the prop shaft seals and causing water to leak into the saildrive. This diluted the oil and decreased lubricity causing damage to the bearings and gears. Estimated date of completion is May 1, 2018.

NEW for 2018 is our extensive inventory of Yanmar engine parts including filters, belts, zincs, o-rings, gaskets, ignition switches and keys, complete panels, wiring harnesses and waterpumps. We also stock fast-moving parts for Northern Lights, Westerbeke, Universal and Kubota engines and Sherwood and Johnson impellers, Racor fuel filters, marine hoses and clamps.
